Have you really looked into Bagmati now!?
It‘s like “once upon a time…” when you think of not-so-many-years-ago Bagmati! It was so very clean…clear and pristine then!

What do you think happened to all those fish and other creatures that lived in the river? They had no choice to move out of their habitat; unlike us humans, who migrate (move) from one place to another when we don’t like a place! They had no choice but to die! Bagmati once so vibrant, glorious and full of life in its natural form and supporting other lives – of humans as well - and so very active in playing a role in our culture, has transformed into something so very horrible today! Pitiful! Disdainful, even!
Save Bagmati! Give and you shall receive more than you gave! In fact, you will be serving yourself!
Donate (through SMS) NRs.5 Rupees (and your name along with it) to save Bagmati! NRs.5 is peanuts for you but your contribution will go a long way in saving (reviving) river Bagmati…bring it back to life again!
Not a single creature that lived in it years ago exists in it now!
You could tell your grand children, once upon a time there was this beautiful temple…at least, your grand children can conjure up an image of the temple…that is if your memory still serves you right and you can truthfully describe about the temple creatively!
We, Nepalese, are also religious people, aren’t we? Then why are we letting something so very attached to the core of our religious life (belief) disintegrate into nothing in front of our very eyes?
And, what about its role in our culture? People don’t go near it, these days, unless they MUST, so forget about holding some puja or a ceremony along the river! When people don’t go there as often as they are supposed to; all those beautiful temples and places of worship disintegrate, naturally…and, at this rate, one day soon they will vanish altogether!
Along with the time, with democracy coming into the country, with cutting edge technology coming into the country…only it seems we have become thick-skinned. We have become so very insensitive to others’ plights! We got democracy, however, knowingly or unknowingly we have crushed some others’ right to live! Those fish and all those other animals/ creatures that Bagmati helped LIVE!
Fast forward to future:
Every morning you can go to the riverside for your morning walk! You can see colorful fish swimming in there along with all those fascinating animals/ creatures smiling back at you!
Imagine yourself participating in some religious function/ ceremony beside Bagmati without getting sick (if not on the spot)! Why, we could even hold other social/ public events alongside of the river IF the environment was healthy.
Somebody said, “बागमती यस्तो गनाउछ कि आँखै फुट्छ। ”. That should sum up the present condition of Bagmati…once pristine…LIVING Bagmati. Bagmati.. Supporting…nurturing so many other lives (many of us Kathmanduites, mainly)!
Donate to save Bagmati…save lives…save culture…save our heritage! The goddess Bagmati (along with many other gods and goddesses that reside by the riversides) you worship will be pleased with you!
